Starting the second half of our year in third grade has been nothing but joyful! We are busy, busy, busy learning.
Reading
We are continuing to learn strategies and skills to become better readers. We kicked off our Bull Frog Reading Program this Monday. Our class is going to do a whole class goal. Our goal is to read 5,040 minutes (at home) as a class! The program runs from January 30- March 24! We are excited and eager to read, read, read!! Please remember to send your child's reading log to school every Monday, so we can reach our goal : )
Writing
We had our publishing party for our expository writing unit last week. Every students did a phenomenal job on researching, organizing, and writing their informational book. We used two different methods of research (Online and book) which led us to discussed plagiarism and giving the author credit for their work. Students chose an animal they would like to research and write a nonfiction book about. We discussed informational text features in reading and incorporated the text features in our writing. Everyone did a great job, and I am so proud of the writers we are becoming! This week we started our persuasive/opinion writing. Students are writing a persuasive writing piece on "the best animal". We discussed fact verse opinion and giving reasons and examples to help support our opinions.
Math
We started Unit 4 in math. Unit 4 focuses on place value, rounding, and adding and subtracting multi-digit numbers. We are still practicing our multiplication and division facts to build our fact fluency.
Science/Social Studies
We are awaiting our next Einstein kit which will be Chemicals. It is a very interactive and engaging kit. I am sure the students will really enjoy the unit and experimenting to determine our chemicals.
We are learning all about maps. Students are learning the parts of a map, cardinal directions, intermediate directions, continents, and oceans just to name a few. Students will also be learning their location in the big world. Students will be practicing writing and orally saying their address.
We enjoyed our Jump Rope for the Heart event in Phy Ed last Wednesday! Thank you to everyone who donated to a great cause and to all the students who participated in a great event!
We have had a busy week filled with fun events, and we can't wait for the fun that is yet to come! Catholic Schools Week is a great time to appreciate the foundation, community, and success that Catholic education allows for students, families, and teachers!
