We are busy in third grade learning many new concepts. We will start January by doing our winter testing in reading and math. MAPS testing will begin the second week in January.
In reading, we are continuing to read and analyze nonfiction texts. We are focusing on text features and how to navigate through an informational book. We will take a break from guided reading for a couple weeks, and we will begin our winter benchmark testing. I will begin preforming Fountas and Pinnell running records and word list. Once we are finished with testing, we will begin guided reading again. We will spend a week or two on informational text still, and then move into our new genre.
In writing, we are using what we are learning in reading about informational text and writing our own informational books. Students conducted research about their animal using different sources. We discussed how we need to site our source to give the author credit. We drafted three chapters, an introduction, and a conclusion. We drafted our table of contents. We will begin to edit and revise our writing and start planning our text features to provide more information for our writing. Students are so exctied and proud of all their hard work!
In math, we are finishing up Chapter 3. We will continue to learn concepts on measurements and graphing data. We will finish our lessons, and then spend a couple days reviewing everything we learn since Christmas break fell in the middle of the chapter. Our Math test will be on Tuesday January 17, 2017
In science, we wrapped up our Rocks and Minerals Einstein Kit. We learned the 3 types of rocks and preformed feild tests on 12 different minerals. Students were so intrigued by the rocks and minerals. I see some geologists in the future : ) We will be taking a break of science and starting a geography unit in social studies. Students will learn about the different parts of a map, globe, and we will dicuss our own addresses.
In religion, we spent December celebrating Advent and preparing for Jesus' birth. Each student made their own advent wreath to go along with our class Advent wreath. We "lighted" our room up with kindness just as Jesus wants his disciples to do. Students were able to write a kind deed someone did for them on a Christmas lightbulb, and we strung the lights around our classroom door for all to see. Now, we will be learning about the church calendar and the 4 marks of the church in religion.
